Kate has her baby boy, Conlan, in the prologue. The first year of his life is skipped. The story really starts with Kate getting called out to the scene of an entire village being destroyed. Everyone in the village was boiled and no bones were left behind. After Kate goes home, she receives a strange package filled with ashes and a rose in it. After she brings it in, Conlan shifts into a werewolf for the first time. He is able to hold warrior form already which freaks everyone out. The next day a group of possesed people are outside of Kate's house. One of them cryptically asks Kate for her answer. She obviously has no clue what they are talking about, and they end up killing all of the possesed people after they start catching on fire and attacking. During the fight a large figure fights something else in the clouds. A classmates of Julies, Yu Fong, falls out of the sky and hits the ground immediately following the fight. He is unconscious so they can't wake up him up to ask him what happened.
Later when transporting one of the bodies back to Kate's house, Erra freaked out when she saw it and blew it up. Erra told Kate that these were the same creatures, called Yeddimur, that attacked her and Roland thousands of years ago and that Kate needed to ask Roland for help fighting them. Kate went to Luther with the Biohazard to check up on his progress investigating the village destroyed earlier. In the process one of Roland's assassins attacked Kate. Kate manages to kill the Saharru. Kate went to the People to try to get them to contact Roland and is unsuccessful. Kate leaves Conlan with family and goes to visit the Witches to see if they know anything. They give a cryptic prophesy about a battle involving a lot of fire.
The next day Kate is woken up by Sheriff Beau Clayton. He is calling about another village being destroyed. When she arrives a figure in flames summons a warrior to fight Kate. Kate kills him. After, the figure in fire explains to Kate that he wants her as his wife to help conquer the world. She says no, and he says he will give her a demonstration of his power and dissapears. She then goes to see the druids. They apparently came from the Ireland, and know what this figure is. He was a dragon who conquered Ireland a long time ago before the magic crashed. He stole babies and turned them into mutant monsters that did his bidding. His brother was the one who attacked Roland thousands of years ago.
After going back to Cutting Edge, Kate receives a phone call that Conlan ran away from home and was heading for her. She goes out to meet him and runs into 12 other Saharru assassins and kills them all. Right after they get a call that the Guild was under attack by the Yeddimur. Everyone goes over to help but it was over by the time they got there. Right after they find out Rowena was kidnapped. After Kate finds her vampire stuck to a tree, she reads the clue and follows it to another village that was destroyed. Rowena is encased in a magic fire box. A giant magic boar is released that Curran fights while Kate summons Roland to help her free Rowena. They are successful and Roland agrees to help them fight the dragon. At the end of the fight Curran is visibly larger and Julie confirms he shows up as divine instead of human anymore. Kate finds out he had been purposely eating gods to gain their powers to fight Rolan. Kate is obviously pissed off.
The next day Samian helps Kate talk to Yu Fong through his comma. He confirms he is a dragon and tells them a little bit about how dragon's exist in a separate realm that is tied to an object. Nothing can hurt homans while they are in that realm, but they also can't hurt anything the dragon while he is in there. The dragon can retreat any time he is hurt to regenerate. Kate tries to convince all of the powers in Atlanta about the dragon threat, but no one believes her. Later Hugh D'Ambray shows up and offers to help them. The dragon had attacked both him and Roland on the way over to Atlanta. He had married and was trying to repent for what he had done under Roland's influence. Hugh is able to revive Yu Fong so they can talk with him more about dragons.
A messenger comes and invites Kate to the dragon realm. She goes and talks with Neig the dragon. He show her the size of his army and offers her three days to reconsider joining him in his conquest. After she leaves, she makes a plan with Roland to defeat Neig. All of Atlanta prepares for the battle with him. When Neig shows up, Kate denies him again and the battle starts. Using amplified bagpipes, she is able to drive the Yeddimur crazy so they only have to fight the human warriors in Neig's army. Julie sneaks into the dragon realm to steal the ruby that keeps Neig safe. After they get it out, Kate, Roland, and Curran together kill Neig and destroy his body. Roland betrays them, but Kate kills herself to stop him. Kate positions the ruby from the dragon realm near him so that when she does, he locks onto it to try to keep himself alive. He ends up stuck inside the realm. Curran uses his godhood to ressurect Kate, and accidentally ressurects Erra at the same time. Kate loses her "ownership" of Atlanta in the process. Curran loses his divinity in the process, and tells Kate that was the plan all along. Kate goes to talk to Rolland and he vows to escape. Erra is changed from who she was, but doesn't want to stick arround Kate anymore. She leaves and Julie follows her off into the distance.
This book was positioned as the series finale. Kate is basically all powerful at this point and has defeated anything that really poses a threat. This read like a happily ever after for Kate, Curran, and their family. Now that they were safe from Roland they are planning on having more children. I have a feeling there will be some side POV books for Julie or Erra since they are going off and doing their own thing now.
